Welcome to East Central

East Central -Eastern Market

Originally in Cadillac Square and soon northeast of downtown Detroit, the Eastern Market was first a market for hay and wood sales. Soon, this location became a spot for the wholesale food industry. A six-block public market that runs every Saturday, the Eastern Market is the largest open-air flowerbed market and the largest historic public market district in the United States.

From meat to spices to poultry, more than 150 food and specialty businesses are within the market district. The location was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This neighborhood is home to popular restaurants and bars, and with attractive residential lofts and lots, it is a well-sought after location for residents. Hip cafes and places serving classic Coney Island hot dogs dot the district whose warehouses are being revitalized with murals. There is live jazz and Motown music at Bert's Warehouse Theatre and with the market that is always changing, Eastern Market is a gem amongst Eastern Detroit.
